For years, I wanted to build a bicycle instead of buying one off the shelf. I wanted to understand every component, assemble it myself, and have the tools to maintain it without relying on a bike shop.
This project became much more than buying a bike. It became a complete home workshop.

Wheelset Breakdown
Instead of buying a pre-built wheelset, I built one using individual components.
| Component | Cost (IDR) |
|---|---|
| Strummer Super 30 Rims | 459,207 |
| Strummer Front Hub | 332,243 |
| Novatec Microspline Freehub | 433,900 |
| Stainless Spokes | 93,277 |
| Rim Tape | 31,900 |
| Wheel Building Labor | 100,000 |
Wheelset Total: Rp1,450,527
Adding tires and tubes brings the complete rolling setup to approximately Rp2.21 million.
Workshop Tool Investment
One of my goals was to be able to service the bike myself.
Essential Workshop Tools
- Torque wrench
- Repair stand
- Bleed kit
- Cassette lockring tools
- Chain breaker
- Bottom bracket tools
- Hydraulic hose cutter
- Internal cable routing tool
- Steerer cutting guide
- Rotor tools
- Digital caliper
- Bench vise
- Hex key set
- Rubber mallet
- Screw extractor
Total spent on workshop tools: Rp2,258,216
These tools will continue to be useful long after this bike build, making future maintenance significantly cheaper.
Total Project Cost
| Category | Cost (IDR) |
|---|---|
| Bike Components | 23,231,292 |
| Workshop Tools | 2,258,216 |
Grand Total: Rp25,489,508
What I Learned
The most expensive part of the build wasn't the frame. It was the groupset.
- Groupset: approximately 51% of the bike's value
- Frame: approximately 23%
- Wheelset: approximately 6%
- Cockpit and finishing kit: the remainder
Building the bike myself also changed how I think about maintenance. Instead of paying a shop for every adjustment, I invested in tools that will last for years.
Looking back, I don't just own a gravel bike. I now understand how every part works, how to service it, and how to build another one in the future. That knowledge is worth just as much as the bike itself.
